INTERVIEW
Chrissie Hynde
by Scarlet Page
When

met Chrissie
Scarlet Page tells Henley Life about her shoot with
Chrissie Hynde...
“I have been trying to get hold of Chrissie for a long time
with no luck and then I bumped into Didz Hammond who I
knew from previously shooting himwith his bands. It turned
out that he was working for a management company who
looked after Chrissie so suddenly I had a stepping stone and
contact was made. A lot of luck is involved in these things
but then Chrissie had the flu and had to cancel some shows
and then she was away. And then I got a call saying that
Chrissie was in London and was free, and did I still want to
shoot her – of course I did.
“I went to her flat in Maida Vale, where she lives on a very
unassuming street. She shares her house with one of her
daughters who has twin boys. When I arrived Chrissie
answered the door dressed head to toe in red including a
mock Coca-Cola t-shirt with ‘Enjoy Akron’ on it, Akron being
Chrissie’s home town.
“I love red anyway and thought she looked really striking.
We went upstairs for a cup of herbal tea with her daughter
who reminded me of myself, quite straight, normal, quiet,
just raising her kids and doing her thing, but yet with this
really famous rock star mother. Not to mention the fact that
her father is Jim Kerr of Simple Minds.
“Before we had even shot anything we drank tea and put
the world to rights, and discussed the odd species that is the
male rock star. Most people probably know that she also has
a daughter by Ray Davies (of The Kinks).
“After that the shots came easily, we did them in her front
room, up against the shutters, it was all very informal and
natural and Chrissie is just pretty damn cool.“

Chrissie at Christmas
Chrissie Hynde is no stranger to raising awareness and
money for charity through her rock star status and powerful
vocals as the front woman for The Pretenders. She was
involved in the Christmas album for Bob Geldof’s famine
relief in 1987 and in 1995 Comic Relief adopted the single
Love Can Build a Bridge
on which she sang with Cher, Neneh
Cherry and Eric Clapton.
This December Chrissie will be in the spotlight again as
part of the Sky One and Sky Arts Christmas concert, which
takes place at the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday, December
7 to be broadcast on December 23.
Chrissie is the special guest in a star-studded line-up that
includes Marc Almond, Holly Johnson, Alexander Armstrong
and Alexandra Burke, hosted by comedian and musical star,
Jason Manford. The artists will be performing their favourite
Christmas hits, old and new at the truly festive celebration.
