SENIORS
Other than our health, time is today’s most
precious commodity. Modern technology can
hinder the luxury of passivity, so not only is
our time taken up in communication, but also
in doing more. It is easier to organise
ourselves, easier to say yes to things, easier to
get there, easier to consume and buy. Time is
running away with us.
Therefore, heading towards our latter years
affords us the enviable gift of more time in the
day.
Obviously, seniors may have many health
appointment commitments at the very least,
but nothing like the time-devouring rigours
of modern, working life with a young family.
Therefore it may be that seniors have the
greatest gift to give, even when they have
downsized their own lives and budgets -- the
gift of time.
This needs to be given practically, and
thoughtfully, but is still an achievable treat
to give to someone else, and in doing so, is
likely to enrich the life of the giver.
With a ‘loneliness epidemic’ in the UK
growing monthly a significant number of
elderly people have very little human
interaction on a daily basis. Maybe if they
could offer their time to others their lives
would be better?
For example, a former seamstress living in
an isolated village may be able to make a
few things for the local charity Christmas
bazaar and in doing so establish new
personal connections.
Or someone living on a busy street may
know a frazzled single mother, who could do
with a night out, and a local babysitter. The
upside of our increased communication
network is sometimes things are easier to
achieve and arrange.
In terms of friends and family at Christmas
time there are many options. If mobile and
driving, then the gift of a journey, or
spending time with someone immobile, or
making a jar of marmalade for family
members will be a thoughtful, unique
present that has taken your time, but very
little money or extreme effort.
Sometimes we are invigorated by doing
things we used to, and have fallen out of the
habit of doing. For example if you were a
gardener then potting up old-fashioned
flower pots with bulbs would make a
stunning gift. Or maybe offering a morning's
gardening for a family member in the
Springtime. You may not have many funds or
ideas at your fingertips, but in terms of giving
to others, time may be your greatest gift.
The gift of time...
Sometimes we are invigorated by
doing things we used to do
